SFUMATO ROOMS

Location: Odesa, Ukraine
Project Area: 120 sq.m.
Project Year: 2022

Located at the seaside of Odesa, Ukraine, Sfumato Rooms feels like a secret place. This boutique hotel, hidden inside a bigger hotel complex, was inspired by the fog, the softness of the Black Sea, and the cozy comforting feel of Odesa, which is reflected in the hotel’s name.

The goal of the Studio Binar designers was to translate a strong feeling of connection with nature and create a cozy atmosphere to help you relax. The initial concept was inspired by the owner of the hotel, who wanted to show similarities between the views of Greece and Odesa.

The cave-like look of the rounded wall-to-ceiling transition is inspired by Ukrainian heritage and resembles “mazanka” - a traditional Ukrainian hut with clay-covered walls. These huts have a very distinct effortless and slightly messy look, which was reinterpreted for this project using plaster mixed with sand.

The walls also feature circular shapes that subtly hint at the cave paintings - the first trace of the symbiosis between humans and nature. The circle is one of the significant symbols of Ukrainian culture, representing purity, wholeness, softness, and cyclic movement.

These fluid circular shapes are also repeated in the headboards, coffee tables, mirrors, and bedside lamps, most of which were designed and custom-made specifically for this project.

The interior shapes are supported by the organic flow between all parts of the space. There’s no rigidity, and the kitchen, dining, lounge, and bedroom areas connect seamlessly. The color palette of greys, sandy beige, and off-white mixed with the ash wood adds to the soft and relaxed feel of the rooms and is reminiscent of the seashore colors.

The hotel has all the modern comforts, including tropical showers, soft linen fabrics, and a full kitchen in two of the rooms, to make you feel extra homey and comfortable.

Panoramic windows are one of the highlights of the interior, providing loads of natural light. In one of the rooms, the bath is placed right in front of the windows, giving a panoramic view of the sea. The same goes for the shower - the floor-to-ceiling windows and mirrors provide an expansive view of the water and the feeling of being one with nature.
